The two 20-year-old chillers providing air conditioning at this small rural medical center had reached the end of their useful lives. The cost to operate and maintain them kept growing, and the hospital was concerned one of the units might fail at any time. Unfortunately, lead times to acquire new equipment were long.
We arranged for pre-purchase of two new 250-ton, energy-efficient centrifugal chillers, ensuring they would arrive in time for installation before warm weather. We replaced both the chilled water and condenser water pumps, installing variable frequency drives to match pump speed and load—another energy saver. We also connected the chillers and pumps to a new Direct Digital Control (DDC) system for ease of operation.
