The Challenge

The redevelopment of Des Moines’ historic 2.5-acre square presented several challenges, including the complexity of integrating modern features with the site’s original 1970s design. Extensive coordination was required between multiple stakeholders, including Des Moines Performing Arts, the City of Des Moines, and local utility providers, to meet the needs of diverse programming from outdoor markets to concerts and civic events. Additionally, the installation of intricate features such as the interactive water feature, color-changing LED lights, and the artist Jim Campbell’s light sculpture demanded precise engineering and careful consideration of the site’s infrastructure.

KEDbluestone Solution

KEDbluestone played a crucial role in overcoming these challenges by providing local engineering expertise throughout the project, from schematic design to construction administration. Our team ensured seamless collaboration between the design team and stakeholders, facilitating the integration of modern amenities while respecting the historical elements of the site. By carefully addressing the technical and logistical aspects, we successfully completed the project, creating a vibrant, functional space that now supports a wide range of downtown events and activities.
