The Challenge

Following a master planning project with Morton School District 709, we began a series of grade school facility additions. The district’s grade school facilities were no longer meeting the classroom capacity needs of the growing district. Additionally, gymnasiums became a state requirement, so each of the district’s grade schools needed to add a gymnasium on to its facility. However, the buildings were not designed to easily accommodate additions or renovations due to their age, adding complexity to the project.

KEDbluestone Solution

We coordinated closely between disciplines to overcome the utility space constraints that came with the older building designs. We designed new, state-of-the-art systems within the existing, original school structures. We also designed systems for a new addition for each facility to provide the necessary additional classrooms and gymnasium space. As a result, Morton’s grade schools are now large enough to support the growing community, are up to date on state requirements regarding physical education and have modernized systems to ensure more comfortable learning environments for students and staff.
