Renovating, Expanding, & Adding Geothermal to an Elementary School

Washington Elementary School - Jacksonville, IL

The Challenge

Washington Elementary School needed to be expanded to include the addition of a new gym, lobby, and office space. The old building’s hidden conditions made initial planning a challenge, with its existing structure often revealing unexpected surprises. The solid ceilings, which had no space above, complicated the installation of new systems, and coring into the walls for conduits added more hurdles. Additionally, delays in the supply chain meant essential electrical components were unavailable, leaving the school dependent on temporary power while awaiting permanent solutions. Also, the new HVAC system was designed as a geothermal system, adding an extra layer of complexity.

KEDbluestone Solution

Despite these obstacles, KEDbluestone approached each challenge with creativity and expertise. We worked around the building’s existing conditions, designing a geothermal system that met the school’s energy needs while adhering to the building’s limitations. Our team also addressed the power issues by swiftly installing temporary power systems, maintaining strong communication with suppliers to ensure the right components arrived, and keeping the project on track. In the end, we successfully completed the remodel, delivering a larger, fully functional, energy-efficient school that serves the needs of students and staff.
