Bringing Hospital Standby Power Up to Capacity

OSF St. Francis Medical Center

The Challenge

As this medical center expanded over the years, it began to outgrow the performance of its standby generation system. A more than 30-year-old generator in Energy Center 1 failed, while two additional generators in Energy Center 2 no longer provided enough capacity to satisfy code requirements.

KEDbluestone Solution

To replace the failed unit in Energy Center 1, we worked with OSF to help specify and coordinate the pre-purchase of a new generator and, when it arrived, modified the emergency distribution system to ensure it would seamlessly accommodate the new equipment. To increase capacity in Energy Center 2, we replaced the two existing standby units with three new generators, modifying the paralleling switchgear and downstream emergency distribution. We also installed new day tanks and fuel oil supply and return piping for the three units.
