Evaluating High Humidity Problems

OSF CH Building

The Challenge

The second floor of the Children’s Hospital was experiencing high humidity and temperatures. Because the building had been renovated six times since the 1960s, it was challenging to keep track of changes made to the HVAC system. We were asked to take a fresh look at the current system to evaluate how it functioned.

KEDbluestone Solution

Our assessment found that existing radiant ceiling panels designed to provide cooling were not working well, a problem compounded by uneven air flow distribution. Adding balance dampers in the ductwork helped equalize air flow, allowing the building to stabilize at a comfortable temperature. Replacing leaking supply ductwork and reinforcing it with duct sealant at traverse joints also helped address the cooling issue. In addition, we discovered that the system was designed with inadequate capacity, so it struggled to keep up during long spells of heat and humidity. We recommended replacing it with a new VAV system as a comprehensive long-term solution.
