Designing a New Dialysis Treatment Center
THE CHALLENGE The Proctor Professional Building needed to renovate its existing basement space into a new dialysis treatment center. The ceiling height brought challenges, as
OSF St. Mary Medical Center needed to expand their intensive care unit (ICU) in order to better accommodate capacity demands. The hospital planned to convert the neighboring business office spaces into new, ICU isolation rooms. However, the project was challenging due to the system spatial constraints, project phasing constraints, and extensive equipment lead times.
We overcame the spatial and project phasing constraints through detailed coordination and planning. We kept the existing ICU functional throughout the entirety of the project. We mitigated equipment lead times by weighing equipment options based on availability. Each isolation room includes a dedicated exhaust fan, a requirement of isolation rooms. We also designed the system to include a specialized AHU that is capable of bringing in nearly 100% outside air, thereby greatly improving air quality. As a result, St. Mary Medical Center now has an expanded ICU, providing additional capacity, as well as state-of-the-art ICU isolation rooms for improved quality of care.
