Expanding and Modernizing Elmwood Elementary School’s HVAC System

Elmwood Elementary School

The Challenge

Elmwood Elementary School needed to replace its outdated HVAC system with a modernized and energy-efficient one. The school also needed to expand into the existing, unconditioned spaces. Having just recently completed an HVAC upgrade for Elmwood High School, the administration requested that we design as similar of a system to the high school as possible. A unique challenge of the elementary school was that the design would need to run through an unfinished attic space, bringing specific code requirements.

KEDbluestone Solution

We included fifty fire dampers in the system design of the unfinished attic space, ensuring a safe and code compliant design. The high school’s HVAC system was replicated in many areas of the elementary school, and in the equipment selection process, re-creating the type of system the district was so happy with originally. An energy wheel was included in the design, which uses exhausted interior air to pre-heat the fresh, outside air before pulling it inside, greatly improving energy efficiency. As a result, Elmwood Elementary School now has a state-of-the-art HVAC system that serves the entire school, thereby improving learning environments for students and staff.
