Expanding Graham Hospital’s Intensive Care Unit (ICU)

The Challenge

Graham Hospital needed to expand its ICU, to better meet demand. To create the necessary space for the expansion within the hospital, the department planned to eliminate the waiting room and physician room spaces. The client requested that the new rooms’ aesthetics match that of the existing department. This expansion required modifications of existing systems, as well as new system designs. Adding complexity, the existing nurse call system was out of life, so there was no way to extend the existing nurse call system to the new ICU spaces.

KEDbluestone Solution

We researched to find the most similar nurse call system alternative and coordinated with the supplier to create a solution that allowed for necessary communications. Existing MEP/FP systems were modified as necessary and the new ICU rooms’ systems were designed, thereby broadening ICU capacity. We made decisions with aesthetics in mind, ensuring to create a seamless transition between the new spaces and existing department. As a result, the space which previously housed the waiting room and physician room, now houses additional ICU rooms, allowing Graham Hospital to accept and treat more critical care patients in their time of need.
