Extending a School to Provide New Learning Spaces

The Challenge

The client needed to completely remove a section of their building and replace it with an addition for a new gym, cafeteria, and kitchen. However, this project had to be arranged around the school’s schedule, making the timeline a complex and important component of the job. Another complexity was the maple wood floors used in their new gym; the material is extremely sensitive to humidity levels. The existing gas service for the addition had site constraints that limited piping pathways.

KEDbluestone Solution

We overcame the gas challenges by running the piping on the exterior of the building, avoiding internal constraints completely. To address the humidity sensitivity of the gym’s new maple wood floors, we added a sensible energy wheel air handling unit (AHU), which captures the correct temperature of air needed to maintain precise humidity control throughout every season. We phased the project’s construction to accommodate the school’s schedule, thereby minimizing learning disruption. With the addition, we increased security measures and provided new electrical distribution to support LED lighting, thereby increasing efficiency. Ultimately the school received new learning environments, including a brand-new gym, cafeteria, kitchen, restrooms, concessions, classrooms, and computer lab.
