The Challenge
The Field Services department of Iowa State University’s College of Veterinary Medicine needed space to expand, as they provide essential on-farm veterinary and lab testing services for Central Iowa and beyond. The facility faced several challenges: insufficient space to accommodate teaching opportunities for students, limited operational areas for faculty and residents, and an urgent need to enhance biosecurity measures. The existing layout required reconfiguration to address issues such as inadequate separation of clean and dirty pathways, outdated storage solutions, and inefficiencies in
fomite control. Moreover, the building’s mechanical systems were outdated and needed comprehensive upgrades to support the department’s expanding operations.
KEDbluestone Solution
KEDbluestone played a pivotal role in the success of this project, delivering full MEP/T services for the facility and allowing it to nearly double in size. New mechanical systems were installed throughout the building to improve efficiency and ensure reliable operations. Strategic adjustments were made to the layout, introducing separate pathways for clean and dirty areas to enhance biosecurity. Additions included improved specimen storage and decontamination areas, state-of-the-art teaching labs, simulation labs, classrooms, and expanded office spaces. Construction was carefully phased to prevent disruptions to critical services for area farms.
