Mason City’s New Airport Terminal project started as a study to determine the best process for renovating the existing airport, as it was a historic site and there was a lot of sentimentality to try and save it. Deciding to put up a new building instead came with its own set of challenges. The new building was right next to the old one and there was a lot of coordination needed to minimize disruption to flights. Along the way, there were also distribution and maneuverability challenges.
Through the study, it was ultimately decided that designing a new terminal was the best choice. The new terminal has a VRF system, making it very energy efficient. Since the airport typically only has one incoming and one outgoing flight each day, the system we designed allows them to dial back the temperature in areas when they aren’t being used, including offices, conference rooms, the terminal, and baggage claim. Because of the equipment availability issues that popped up last minute, we had to design a new ERV in a few days so that the terminal could open on time. By tying into the existing airside and landside utilities, the airport was able to remain operational and not miss a single day of flights during the transition.
