Modernizing a School with a New Boiler System & Air Conditioning

Trewyn Middle School

The Challenge

Retrofitting the middle school with air conditioning required adaptations and innovative engineering design around the existing systems. The boilers stretched almost two stories in height and were no longer working efficiently. The school was working within a tight budget, due to limited funding. There was also a large amount of asbestos in the school and while this is not uncommon, it does require extra precautions and specialized removal procedures.

KEDbluestone Solution

KED coordinated the asbestos removal in order to facilitate the desired design. While it was an added complexity in the plans, we made sure to follow the proper procedures to ensure safety for all involved. In order to accommodate the client’s budget restrictions, we designed a system that met their needs while remaining economically friendly. We replaced the old boilers with three new ones the size of small closets, which provide more capacity and efficiency, drastically lowering energy costs. Also, we were able to route new systems that avoided any interferences with walls and ceilings, while ensuring the design remained aesthetically pleasing.
