After 20 years of use, the college’s biology and chemistry labs needed major upgrades to accommodate the way today’s students learn. Working within the existing structure required careful coordination to avoid penetrating structural beams. Coordination with both the school and the architect was essential to meet the extremely tight summer construction schedule.
In the biology lab, we installed a single-point exhaust system over the demonstration area, with sound-deadening insulation connections to mitigate noise distractions. In addition to upgrading the existing local branch panel, we designed a new isolated power branch panel that provides a grounding pathway to protect sensitive lab equipment. We also added acid waste piping to new sinks and reworked natural gas lines with emergency solenoid shut-off valves for safety. In the chemistry lab, updates included the addition of an exhaust fan and fume hoods.
