The Challenge

Illinois Central College purchased an existing building with the intention of transforming it into a new dental facility for the school’s dental hygienist students. However, the existing mechanical penthouse brought space constraints, as it was not designed to house all of the necessary equipment for a dental clinic. Also, dental tools require electrical, mechanical, and plumbing hook-ups all within a very small footprint, making system designing challenging. Dental facilities also require specialized healthcare systems such as compressed air, vacuum, and reverse osmosis water (RO), adding complexity.

KEDbluestone Solution

Our designs included compressed air, vacuum, and RO water, and we coordinated closely with each department, ensuring our MEP designs would work with one another and allow for the necessary utility hook-ups. We overcame the mechanical room space constraints through detailed planning, allowing us to fit all new equipment in the allotted space. As a result, ICC students now have new, modernized classroom spaces, a new lab, and a clinic, allowing them to perform dental cleanings and other services to the public, providing them with real-world experience while still in school.
