Designing a New Dialysis Treatment Center
THE CHALLENGE The Proctor Professional Building needed to renovate its existing basement space into a new dialysis treatment center. The ceiling height brought challenges, as
Elmwood High School needed to upgrade their locker rooms, sports locker rooms, weight room, and gymnasium. Specifically, the gym needed better climate control and ventilation in the space. Due to the exposed nature of the locker room ceilings, the lighting systems were challenging to arrange. The locker room ceilings are also black, absorbing the lighting making it appear poorly lit.
We resolved both lighting issues by adjusting the fixture locations and orientation to allow the light to fill the space, while also planning around any existing exposed utilities and beams. The fixtures and exit signs used are specialized, breakage-resistant materials to prevent vandalism or accidental damage. We re-routed existing ductwork to allow for the necessary HVAC upgrades in the gym. As a result, the system now has state-of-the-art temperature and humidity controls and improved ventilation in the space, allowing students to be more comfortable in P.E. and the community to be more comfortable during sporting events.
